Angelica Root:
Aroma: Rooty/woody, herbaceous. Bitter, sweet and earthy. Balsamic, spicy. Long-lasting, often used as a fixative.
Country of Origin: Hungary
Aromatherapy Properties: Restorative, tonic. Stimulating in small doses, sedating in large doses. Warming, comforting, aphrodisiac. Purifying. Grounding.
Suggested Use: Sniffing directly from the bottle can help curb an appetite.
History: Ancient medical remedy with a wide range of applications. As the botanical name implies, it was always considered an "Angel's Herb". Originating in Spain, Angelica Root was one of the few spices that were actually exported from Europe to the Orient. It was used as a common flavoring and apothecary drug, and, referred to as the "Root of the Holy Ghost", was considered to contain magical powers. It is also a flavoring for Cointreau liqueur.
Specific Safety Information: Powerful oil and photosensitizing. Apply to skin in very small amounts only. Oil is said to stimulate uterine contractions, so avoid during pregnancy. Also not recommended around young children and diabetics. Use in moderation. GRAS (Generally Regarded As Safe) approved by the FDA as food flavor.
Basil:
Aroma: The aromas of the various Basils are so different that it has been suggested to classify them according to the aroma, instead of botanical relationship. This particular one resembles the basil that is commonly grown in the Western countries and used for Italian cuisine. It is light, fresh, fruity-spicy with a balsamic, anise-like undertone.
Country of Origin: Comoros
Aromatherapy Properties: Warming and toning. Restoring peace of mind and counteracting depression. Clarifying, uplifting, energizing.
Suggested Use: Apply a few drops to a tissue and inhale; or add to a diffuser. This is great to wake up and get your brain cells going, while staying centered and conscious.
Blend Basil Essential Oil with Grapeseed or Olive Oil to make it less concentrated. Then add it to sauces and salad dressings, or stir into savory dishes before serving. Tastes just like freshly harvested basil!
History: Basil originates in India, but is widely used all over the world. It is an herbaceous member of the mint family. Sweet Basil is very characteristic for Italian cuisine. The botanical name "Ocimum" may come from the Greek "to smell", and it is sometimes used to imitate the smell of Lily of the Valley in soaps and fragrances.
Specific Safety Information: Non-toxic, skin-irritant in high concentration. Avoid if pregnant. GRAS (Generally Regarded As Safe) approved by the FDA as food flavor.
Bergamot:
Aroma: Most people know this aroma through Earl Grey tea, which is flavored with Bergamot Oil. It is a fruity citrus oil of spicy-floral freshness.
Country of Origin: Italy
Aromatherapy Properties: Great aroma to balance the mind and regenerate. Citrus oils help to eliminate emotional confusion and increase ones sense of humor and well-being.
Bergamot can be very phototoxic if the sensitizing component - furocoumarin - has not been removed from the oil. Aromaland offers only furocoumarin-free Bergamot Oil, since phototoxic pigmentation of the skin lasts for a long time and we do not want anybody to have this experience.
Suggested Use: Use a few drops in a diffuser to freshen the aroma climate of your home. Sniff directly from the bottle to feel fresh and fight melancholy.
Add 10 drops of Aromaland's Goddess Blend (which contains Bergamot) to 1oz. of unscented body care product for a luxurious experience.
Citrus Essential Oils are among the few Essential Oils with a limited shelf life. Keep your citrus oils away from heat and direct sunlight, and in tightly closed containers; your fridge would be great! Try using them within 6 months of purchase. Older oils may not be appropriate for medicinal or skin care purposes, but can still add citrus-power to a diffuser blend.
Black Pepper:
Aroma: Sweet, warm, even fruity pepper note. Does not have the harshness associated with the freshly ground spice, yet is a very exotic, masculine, spicy oil. Pepper Essential Oil won't make you sneeze like fresh ground pepper does.
Country of Origin: Madagascar
Aromatherapy Properties: Warming and comforting. Aphrodisiac. A mental stimulant that is uplifting, strengthening and inspiring.
Suggested Use: Dilute Black Pepper Oil in an unflavored/neutral Carrier Oil such as Grapeseed or Canola Oil, and use in preparing sauces and savory dishes. Add a drop while preparing whipping cream; a wonderful addition to fresh, fragrant strawberries or mango! GRAS (Generally Regarded As Safe) approved by the FDA as food flavor.
Add 9 drops of Aromaland's Muscle Warm Blend (which contains Black Pepper) to 1oz. of unscented massage oil or lotion, and use to prepare for a workout or competition.
Cedarwood:
Aroma: Dry/woody aroma, sweet/balsamic. The scent reminds people of pencils, and has a tobacco type note to it.
Country of Origin: USA
Suggested Use: Your closet should smell like Cedarwood to keep moths out, and you may want to place tissues with drops of Cedarwood (and Lavender), as well as your empty Cedarwood bottles, in your closet. Generally, insects do no like this scent.
History: This oil has been used as a remedy by native Southwest cultures (USA). In former times, linen chests were frequently crafted from this wood to keep moths out. To date, clothes hangers are frequently crafted from this wood for the same reason. The ancient Egyptians used this oil in various ways, namely to embalm the deceased, for cosmetics and for perfumery.
Clary Sage:
Aroma: Mellow, warm, herbaceous/hay-like, with a musky/amber note. Important ingredient of Eau de Cologne.
Country of Origin: Hungary
Aromatherapy Properties: Visualizing, spiritually connecting, centering. Clary Sage may induce euphoria when inhaled, and will increase drunkenness when used in combination with alcohol consumption. It is great to balance extremes of emotion and restore inner tranquility.
It's also wonderful in helping mature skin look its best, as well as being a great hair care ingredient.
Suggested Use: Apply a few drops to a tissue and inhale; or add to a diffuser. Make sure to use in moderation and only if you are about to rest, since Clary Sage can alter your state of mind if used in high doses.
Apply 1 drop to your hairbrush to rejuvenate and naturally scent hair and scalp.
To add to a bath - in order to prevent the oils from floating on the surface - you may want to blend the Essential Oil with some Half and Half, honey, or vinegar.
History: Quite popular in the Middle Ages, when it was used for digestive disorders, a variety of problems of the internal organs and as a general nerve tonic. It was a popular ingredient of wine (muscatel wine) and beer
Some of the largest consumers are the tobacco industry, who like to flavor their tobacco with Clary Sage.
Specific Safety Information: No known toxicity. Much safer to use than other members of the Sage family. Avoid during pregnancy. GRAS (Generally Regarded As Safe) approved by the FDA as food flavor. May accelerate the effects of alcohol. Avoid during pregnancy, except for time of labor.
Tangerine:
Aroma: Warm, fresh citrus scent, radiant, fruity and tangy. This oil smells just like Mandarin Orange, an aroma that is reminiscent of, yet lighter than Orange. However, Tangerine is more candy-like and energetic.
Country of Origin: USA
Aromatherapy Properties: Refreshing and rejuvenating, its aroma inspires and brings fresh energy; clears the mind. Citrus oils help to eliminate emotional confusion and increase ones sense of humor and well-being. Very comforting/soothing and warming.
In moderation, Tangerine is an effective skin care ingredient, but avoid large concentrations due to potential phototoxic reactions. It can also be a great discovery in the kitchen; use very sparingly in sauces, dressings, pastries and desserts. GRAS (Generally Regarded As Safe) approved by the FDA as food flavor.
Suggested Use: Use a few drops in a diffuser to freshen the aroma climate of your home. Add a few drops to the water when washing dishes or cleaning the house. Add very sparingly to food for an exciting Tangerine flavor, for example, in desserts, salads, and pastries.
